George Tyson, June 1, 2005 (42.66MB; download) -- George Tyson, CEO of Orbital Commerce Project, Inc. (OCP), was the guest for this edition of The Space show. OCP is dedicated to training personnel for the commercial human space flight industry and this is the subject of this show. Mr. Tyson spoke about both the pilot training programs and the payload specialist training programs. He pointed out how he was working with the FAA to establish pilot flight training qualifications and programs similar to what exist now within the FAA and earning a pilots license. Mr. Tyson shared his thoughts and experience with us regarding how best to develop the space tourism and pilot flight training industry. In response to a listener question, Mr. Tyson discussed prestige and ego as reasons for many nations to have their own fleet of space tourism vehicles and eventually enter the space tourism business. In response to other listener questions, Mr. Tyson talked about the suborbital industry support for his ideas and he let us know who he was talking with about providing the flight training for suborbital crews. He was asked about the possibility of providing the same for space programs outside the United States. We also discussed the reaction and feedback he gets when talking to general audiences about space tourism and suborbital crew flight training. You can learn more about Orbital Commerce Project, Inc. by visiting the website at www.orbitalcommerceproject.com. Mr. Tyson can be reached by email at gtyson@orbitalcp.com. Mr. Tyson is offering the suborbital space industry a unique product and approach to providing crews for their vehicles. The Space Show will follow the OCP progress and Mr. Tyson will be back with us to give us an update. Selected by: Harold Gilchrist [ stations ], Thu, 02 Jun 2005 10:04:03 UTC

Rip & Read #116 - 2005-05-31 (6.32MB; download) -- Show #116. Listen here: Subscribe here: Here's what I Ripped & Read today: The French Non Bush's Presser An Unholy AllianceThe French NonAfter the resoundingly negative vote on the European Union constitution by the French people last week, lots of people in the blogosphere were speaking triumphantly about the defeat for the position taken by French President Chirac. After all, it was Chirac that lead the "old Europe" in opposition to the overthrow of Sadam Husein. Many saw the EU vote as a defeat for the anti-American French. But, as a closer look shows, it was a victory for the protectionist elements in France: the protectionist unions and the Socialist left. Rich Lowery at National Review Online suggests reading the blog EU Referendum for more insight. Next up are the Dutch who vote this week. This blog is by no means alone in predicting dire consequences for referendums; the pollsters currently [are] having a field day on the Dutch referendum.A poll conducted by Maurice de Hond for Dutch TV on Saturday showed 57 percent of voters were against the constitution and the latest shows a clear majority for the "nee" camp of 59 percent.Trailing along in the wake of Chirac, it is now Jan-Peter Balkenende's turn, as prime minister of the next lamb to the slaughter to issue "an urgent appeal to voters", this time imploring them to ignore the French result and make up their own minds. However, Balkenende has perhaps left it a bit late to make his appeals, which seem to be having very little, if any, effect. He might have been better advised to have read a report published ten months ago, which we featured in this Blog.Headed: "Why European citizens will reject the EU constitution", it was written by a Dutch academic, Claes H. de Vreese, who attempted to impose a rigid scientific discipline on referendum predictions. In so doing, he carried out a complex statistical analysis of existing data, in order to isolate the most important issues that determine a result. He came up with three key variables which influence voting behaviour. These were: attitudes on immigration; economic outlook; and sentiments towards the national government.Basically, those who express negative views on immigration; who are pessimistic about economic prospects; and/or do not support their current government, are more likely to vote "no" in a referendum. Of the three issues, it seems that "immigration" is the most important.Putting these factors together, de Vreese wrote that the constitutional referendums "will result in a 'no' outcome under conditions of high levels of anti-immigration sentiments, pessimistic economic outlooks, and/or unpopularity of a government" - exactly the conditions which prevail in The Netherlands. He thus concluded that any government calling for a referendum "must be very popular to compensate for the negative impact of economic pessimism and anti-immigration sentiments" in order to win the vote.At the time the paper was published, I wrote that it was "essential reading for referendum campaigners". From all the current indications, however, it does not look as if Balkenende read it – otherwise, without even looking at the polls, he would have known he was going to lose.In this context, I suppose, the prime minister can mark down his referendum on Wednesday – in the matter of a television chef – as "one I lost earlier".The Non vote in France had one image that lead their side throughout their successful repudiation of the EU referendum. As Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit found, it was a Polish Plumber who drove the anti-European agenda. In TechCentral Station, Sylvain Charat wrote:... the French vilified so much the "Polish Plumber", a character created to frighten French workers and make them believe the Constitution would open the doors to foreigners who would take their jobs. ... The French referendum was not only about the European Constitutional Treaty, nor Europe itself. It was just a pretence to confirm a widespread feeling i Selected by: Harold Gilchrist [ stations ], Wed, 01 Jun 2005 10:00:20 UTC

Songwriter's Corner (4.73MB; download) -- I wanted to throw something a little different at you today. I let you sit in on a little song writing session with me. :-) Hope you like it, I included the lyrics below:
My Intervention
I don't want to see you fade
I know all things good will change
I sit here watching you fly by
and I beg you, please don't go too high
Cause I miss you,
Don't want to see it rain cause tears
fall down from heaven.
I'm just a bit confused,
and I don't want to let you go.
