What is Podcasting?/How does it work?
If youre new to podcasting the concept is simple: you subscribe to my RSS feed and my show (in mp3 format) is
automatically added to your iTunes/WindowsMediaPlayer and/or your ipod/other Mp3 player. You can set this up by first
downloading a really cool piece of OpenSource/free software called iPodder here:
http://ipodder.sourceforge.net. Then you add my Feed (aka RSS) to
iPodder (you can cut and paste that link into ipodder by right mouse clicking on it):
http://calacanis.weblogsinc.com/rss.xml.
Once youve added my feed to ipodder the software will check my RSS feed for changes every now and then. When it does
find a blog post with an Mp3 file attached (called an enclosure) it will add that file to your iTunes and iPod (or
other software/players). You dont need to have a player of course, you can just have iPodder drop the mp3 file to
your hard drive.

Rip & Read #118 - 2005-06-06 (6.26MB; download) -- Show #118. Listen here: Subscribe here: Here's what I Ripped & Read today: Washington Election Recertified - Republicans Fail to Overturn Election Wal-Mart Battle in Cleveland Hyperventilating over The Downing Street Memo Activist Judges in Kansas Amnesty International: We Didn't Mean it Washington Election Recertified - Republicans Fail to Overturn ElectionI listened to the hour long video stream of Judge Bridges read his verdict in the Republican challenge to the Washington state gubernatorial election last fall. In it, Judge Bridges read a long series of findings in the case. By the end it was clear that he was not about to overturn the election. The Republicans had failed to prove some key points, including proof that the illegal votes were actually cast for the winner, and proof of evidence of fraud. It was not enough that there were more illegal votes than the margin of victory, or that mistakes were made. The Republicans had failed to prove that those illegal votes had been cast for Gregoire, and that the contestants in the election had engaged in fraud. The statistical methods that would have convinced a partisan Republican that Rossi should have won was not good enough for the judge. Absent proof, he decided to confirm the certification of the election. Case closed. There is terrific coverage at Sound Politics blog. Here are some clips from the ruling read by Judge Bridges: Play clips.I must say I am disappointed, but as Andy MacDonald at SoundPolitics suggests:Our remedy is to be more organized and to work for candidates who believe as we do. This is one election. There will be hundreds more in our lifetimes and we must contest them all. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.I think we need to win more elections, not contest those already decided!Wal-Mart Battle in ClevelandThe Volohk Conspiracy notes the hypocrisy of the anti-Wal-Mart crowd fighting capital investment and job creation in Cleveland: From today's Cleveland Plain-Dealer: This is why so many job-starved Clevelanders have voiced concerns. Consider the coalition that is building: civil rights groups, elected officials, labor unionists, ministers, small business owners, and, most recently, Cleveland bloggers. We raise our voices in opposition because of the negative effects of a Wal-Mart Supercenter on our town. In other words, Cleveland's elites who don't shop at Wal-Mart are opposed to allowing other people to shop at Wal-Mart. And those with jobs are raising their voices on behalf of "job-starved Clevelanders." Real profiles in courage. Good thing they weren't around when the dry goods stores and blacksmiths were feeling competitive pressures many years ago from supermarkets and the "horseless carriage". Instead of a Wal-Mart, some propose a new "barter" system among downtown businesses (to prove I'm not making this up, I quote): Instead of a Wal-Mart why not: Use the steelyard site to set-up a bartering community between local businesses. Some years ago I was in Connecticut visiting a college friend for a time. Local businesses had joined together and created a bartering system which allowed small business owners to spend real money on other things. An example: A portrait painter needed some film developed. Instead of going to the nearest big box, she took it to a local developer who was part of the barter network and used some barter points to pay for it. The photo guy might have needed a birthday cake for his daughter ... When I was working on my graduate degree in Economics at Clemson, many of the small businesses around Clemson actually had a flourishing barter system, like that described. But the operative term to describe it there was "tax dodge." Barter and in-kind contributions among various local businesses was a system for buying and selling goods and services without having to pay taxes on them.
