His area of expertise is in Egyptian funerary equipment and architecture in the second to third Intermediate Periods. He also studies European medieval royal burial practices as well as the history of Egyptology and Egyptian collections. In 1999, Lacovara initiated the Carlos Museum's acquisition of a large collection of Egyptian art and artifacts from the Niagara Falls Museum in Canada. The cache included the mummy Lacovara and others now believe to be the missing pharaoh Rameses I. This interview was conducted by Gail Willumsen and edited by David Levin.
