Episode 15: The Lady From Shanghai (22.13MB; download) -- Every Orson Welles film demonstrates the great director's ability to work with and against filmic tradition. "The Lady from Shanghai" is a compendium of noir conventions: it tells a tale of post-war greed, of Americans willing to tear each other asunder for a dollar; it is the story of an irresistible dame and the smart guy who becomes a chump the second he lays eyes on her; it uses A-stars against type so as to bring out their blemishes and inner demons (even daring to cut and dye Hayworth's famous hair!). It is thus a classic noir tale, but it is executed with such self-consciousness that the viewer is left to wonder if it isn't the beginning of the end for noir--an elaborate staging of the demolition, the shattering, of the film noir universe. This recording is a laboratory reconstruction of the sounds heard by Huygens' microphones. Several sound samples, taken at different times during the descent, are here combined together and give a realistic reproduction of what a traveller on board Huygens would have heard during one minute of the descent through Titan's (moon of Saturn) atmosphere.

Radar Echos - Podcasting From Saturn II (0.43MB; download) -- One Year Ago Cassini - Huygens Probe Lands on Titan.
This recording was produced by converting into audible sounds some of the radar echoes received by Huygens during the last few kilometres of its descent onto Titan (moon of Saturn). As the probe approaches the ground, both the pitch and intensity increase. Scientists will use intensity of the echoes to speculate about the nature of the surface.

A Punk Legend Returns (2.67MB; download) -- A Punk Legend Returns. (Baby Yo MP3) Franz Bielmeier, also known as Mary Lou Monroe, was the founding member of Dusseldorf's great punk band Charley's Girls, who then evolved into Mittagspause. Remember the Ratinger Hof? Later, he set up the famous Rondo record label and wrote and recorded beautiful songs for his new band, Aqua Velva. After some private trouble he vanished, only to resurface again for the interviews published in Jrgen Teipel's book about the history of German punk rock, Verschwende deine Jugend; then he disappeared again.
And now he's back. Franz has started recording again, and it's FAB. He gave permission to publish four of his new songs exclusively right here at The Cartoonist. With the exception of Dub, all those songs are part of his Schwester Strahl (Sister Ray) project. Be prepared for some fabulous noise:
